4. Let's discuss some of the internet safety rules in our top 10 list. Which ones do you already follow? We will also share some of our internet safety comics and movies. We will also create a Word Cloudfor each of our wiki pages. Wait! We're not done! We've talked about cyberbullying and staying safe online. Since you are in middle school, you might start hearing kids talk about social networking sites, such as Facebook. It's especially important to be good digital citizens when we visit social networking sites.

5. We are almost done! One more topic that we need to cover and that is copyright. To be good digital citizens, we need to learn how to use material on the internet appropriately and follow copyright law.
Respecting copyrights - everyone has a right to earn a living from their work. The author or artist is the only person who has the right to make copies or to give permission to make copies. They are protected by copyright laws.
Fair Use for School Work - It's ok for students to use copyrighted works in school reports and projects without getting permission. Use of work by a student is called Fair Use.
When you use copyrighted works, always give credit to the author of the work you are copying. Also, you must put quotations around copyrighted words.
Some rules to follow - give credit when you:
  • copy someone's exact words - even one sentence.
  • copy someone elses drawings, diagram, chart or graph.
  • copy facts that most people do not know.
  • Tell someone elses idea in your own words.

Here are some good websites to visit:

6. Mr. Mirkin suggested we take a look at the school district AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) contracts encourage responsible behavior by students and staff and give administrators enforceable rules for acceptable use of school computers. We will examine our AUP and answer some questions to understand it better and discuss consequences for breaking these rules.

7. Now let's see if you can pass this test and earn your license!
